The three of us had a very pleasant evening. My mom, mr. Turner and I. Of course, the gentleman was on the other side of the screen, but he amused the two of us just as he was sitting right next to us. And it's not a short move either. For two and a half hours we sat quietly and followed his life story.
The narrative is slow and easy going. It's very obstinate, sturdy and unique. Just like it's protagonist. Although not much happens throughout the whole film, the viewer simply gets attached to his grumpy caracter, his attitude towards art, and people around him. Just like any great artist he is not easy to live with.
But more than anything, what strikes any viewer is the image of the film. It's like story was taking place in Turner's painting itself. The gorgeous pastel brownish colors in art design and costumes, beautiful natural light coming through windows or from candles, perfect compositions... Just a pleasure to watch. Unlike anything I have seen before. The work of cinematographer Dick Pope, BSC is just extraordinary!
