What is that ability that makes us create? What is the magic that enables us to draw, paint, dance, write, create music, films, sculptures, design clothes, cars, gadgets...?
A human being is such a fragile product of nature. We are influenced by thousands of phenomena that pass by us every day, either consciously or subconcsiously. But why fragile? Not necessarily in a negative way, but in my theory a person is easily guided in different directions whether he or she wants it or not, whether he or she is aware of it or not.
All those triggers that pass by us form the way of our life. We bounce from one clue to another thus forming our special and unique way. While being aware of some clues, we are definitely not aware of all of them. And some of them just pass by us not making any difference, while making a huge impact on someone else.
One special thing that I'm talking about is inspiration. It's just one of the many groups of triggers in a person's life, but for an artist it's definitely one of the most important ones. It is amazing how inspirational things shape us through our periods of work, and how the same things inspire us in a different way in different parts of life.
For me, a great inspiration is Federico Fellini. One of few film directors that changed the history of cinema with his influence. But it is not just his work that inspires me. More than that it's how he did it. He really was a true artist, living for his films, and his films were living inside him. As he once said, there is no film that is not subjective, autobiografical. ''Even if someone makes a film that is very objective it is an autobiografical film of someone who is very objective.'' This is true since every filmmaker puts himself into the film, his knowledge, his thoughts, his opinions, and his beliefs, even when making an objective documentary, not to mention a fiction film.
Watching many documentaries and reading books and articles on his work I find it fascinating to see how immersed he was in it. How delighted all the actors were that worked with him, and how they experienced something completely new. They were ready to do the craziest stuff for him, but not because they were afraid of him, or afraid of loosing such an opportunity. They trusted him and his wild imagination, crazy ideas, picturesque fantasies and dreams that were often transfered to celluloid.
His powerful personality and his masterpiece work suck me in every time I watch any of his films or interviews. I'm especially a fan of 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita, Amarcord, Roma, and La Città delle Donne.
Here I'm posting a short documentary about him, and I'm closing this post with one of his wise thoughts from the same film:
''I'm completely comfortable with my enemies and the obstacles that stand in my way of completing what I want to do. They cooperate with me to reach my goal, because it is fighting that makes me see clearer what I want to do.''
